Patagonia Winter 2016 Catalog (U.S.)

Description

Landscape perception has changed significantly over time. Since the 16th century, the artistic portrayal of landscape has been shaped by technologically-enabled and culturally-specific processes of visual mediation. The 21st century has shifted the portrayal of landscape art through dramatic changes in visual technologies — the explosion of camera accessibility as well as photographic media, namely social media accounts, allows for landscape art to be captured and consumed in a matter of seconds. With millions of followers across several accounts, the National Park Service’s Instagram feed is both a means of access into the parks as well as the proprietary form of expression for the visual culture of the parks.

Here, a photograph of Glacier National Park conveys a romantic vision of the national park —its snow-capped mountains and deep glacial lake stand frozen in in the day’s fleeting sunlight. The setting suns casts a brilliant light that dyes the mountains, carved into the park’s horizon, with a densely purple and orange hue. In the foreground, Lake McDonald shimmers with a blurry reflection of the sky above. The photograph, stunning in its panoramic realness, captures a view that a person, standing at the same point, would not be able consume with the naked-eye. Together, the digital camera and Instagram platform surpass the human capacity of sight, offering the fullness and sublimity of Glacier Park all from the frame of a mobile app.
