Here is the Great North American Bison!
@grandtetonnps "Here is the Great North American Bison! Scientific name, Bison Bison; this is the largest land mammal in North America weighing in at over a ton (2,000lbs). This beautiful animal almost went extinct in the mid-19th century with numbers dwindling from approx. 50 million to below 1,000. Luckily the numbers of Bison have bounced back, with large credit due to Yellowstone National Park, to somewhere between 200,000-500,000. The Jackson Hole Valley is home to approx. 900 Bison today. Please remember that these animals, along with all other wildlife, are wild animals and deserve respect and space. The park's official policy is to remain at least 25 yards away from them for safety. #bison #wildlifeiscool #history #grandtetonnationalpark #grandteton #teton #mygtnp #findyourpark #nationalparkservice #npscentennial Photo Credit: C.
